Tuesday Tips #329 – Aceing the Flat Lay

We’ve discussed color compliments and how your chosen items tell a story when it comes to flat lays but one essential not to be over looked for an impactful flat lay is solid composition. Depending on the size and the amount of items you have, sometimes it is better to have have a curved composition and sometimes straight lines do the trick. While you are sharpening your skills at this photography style, keep moving your items every few shots to see which compositions distract and which ones compliment. Take note that when the frame is filled in flat lay photographs, they tend to suggest a more intimate scene but if you are creating images intended for stock photo, the ones with a good deal of negative space are more likely accepted for catalog.

“Good composition is like a suspension bridge – each line adds strength and takes none away.”
