A Gypsy Feature: Chui King Li

Here at Bloom, education in photography is the very center of who we are and what we do. As a graphic designer and a mom to two little ones, Chui King Li had limited time to devote to photography but looking at her latest images post Gypsy Guide workshop, you’d never know she’s only been at photography for a few short years. Coming to the table with strength in composition and color from her graphic design background, Chui’s images have a sense of timelessness and modernism all at the same time. It’s easy to see that after teaming up with Liz, she has found her knack…

I took Liz’s first run of the Gypsy Guide to Learning Manual in January of this year . Prior to this, I was shooting with a crop sensor and a 50mm set on auto aperture. Liz’s dedication to teaching and to her students is something that is to be treasured, and her enthusiasm is infectious. Whilst the course material and her ability to explain how things work is beyond amazing, the course is so much more than how to use your camera, it is about finding your passion and teaching us how to shoot what we love, understanding each of our individual styles and encouraging us with the kindest of words.

So I shoot what I love, and they are my 2 children as they grow. I also love capturing other families and their love for each other, freezing these precious moments in time for others.

Having seen Chui’s images and, subsequently, had the good fortune to work with her – I found her instinctive feel for composition and clarity is breathtaking. And she’s jolly nice to work with too – which always helps.

Stunning Chui. I’ve seen such a change since you took this course. When I look at your photos now, whoever is the subject, I feel I know them. You capture their spirit and essence. And of course, seeing that in your 2 girls is best!
