Carey Pace’s 365

How many of you out there have tried your hand at a 365? If you are anything like us, you’ve had the best intentions once or maybe even twice and have fallen flat once the going got tough. Dont go off and hang your head friend — you’re in good company! That’s why when we come across someone who has managed to push through all the sick days, awful hours, busy holidays and pure exhaustion to compile a completed 365 photography project, we wish we had a gold medal to hand over in celebration. Completing a 365 is certainly no easy fete but completing two? That’s practically the equivalent of riding a unicorn! Which is exactly why we had to share Carey Pace’s 2016 edition with you…

I did my first 365 Project in 2015. I’d resisted doing one for years out of a fear of failure. Really, that’s the only reason. I just knew that I wouldn’t live up to my own expectations, so it was easier to live safe than risk falling flat on my face with a constant feeling of disappointment in myself. I was scared that the pressure to create A R T on a daily basis would crush my creativity and be a burden. I pushed past the resistance and began on January 1. It’s now the end of September in 2016 and I’ve not looked back.

I have several regrets in my photography journey, but not getting over my (ridiculous) fear and doing a 365 earlier on is certainly a big one. I have so many memories documented that I wouldn’t have if I weren’t shooting daily. I’ve learned so much about light and photography. It has pushed me to be ever more creative in my approach. But probably the most profound thing these 365’s have taught me is that pushing through the moments, days, weeks when you just aren’t “feeling it” is the most critical part of the journey.

Do I get a stellar image every single day? Of course not. But more often than not, when I picked up my camera and went LOOKING for something beautiful to photograph, I found it. Some of my favorite images from the last two years have come on those days. But not only have I created imagery that I’m proud of, that shift in your mentality to SEEK OUT light and beauty shifts your focus and mood in other aspects of your life. You cannot help but be moved by finding things of beauty to appreciate.

So if you are sitting on the fence wondering if you’ll fail or won’t find something worth shooting every single day, jump off. Do it anyway. And come see me in a year. CHOOSE to do it, every single day, no matter what. Do it. And then let’s talk. I can’t wait to hear what you have to say.

(I shoot with the Nikon D800 camera and the Sigma 35mm f-1.4 lens 99% of the time)
