Where was this photo taken?
This image was taken in Toronto, Canada. Just a street over to where we live there is a water filtration plant that was built during the art deco era and is quite beautiful.

How did the location add or hinder to your image?
I had this image in mind but was originally thinking a country road location, which is hard to find in the city. It was a very sunny mid-day, and this image was actually shot in the shadows of the building behind me. At the end of the day, I think it worked out even better as the building adds to the vintage feel of the photograph with the vintage Alfa Romeo in the background.

DSLR, iphone, instant or film?
Canon 5Ds shot with a Sigma Art 35 lens.

What were your camera settings for this image?
ISO 160, 1/2500 and f1.6

Can you tell us “The Story Behind” this shot?
I wanted to shoot this image when my husband bought this car. My little girl loves to dance and I wanted to capture her toddler happiness. I also wanted the image to have a very vintage dreamy feel, so I took a risk and was shooting at 1.6 aperture, to have the vehicle and background out of focus.

What speaks to you about this image? What specifically made you press the shutter?
I love everything about this image. The way her foot is in the air, her hands up, her hair and even the little flower bandaid on her finger that I noticed once editing.

What was your composition technique with this shot?
I entered my daughter in front of the car and just asked her to dance. She started twirling and just happened to end up entered in the the centre of the car. It is a very centred image.

Did you have any lighting challenges/How did you light the image?
Like I mentioned this was a very sunny mid day – so we found this location that provided shadow from the building behind me, but I still had lots of light. In a perfect world, I would love there to be sunset golden hour lighting somewhere from the left of the image.

Did you use any special techniques – freelensing, prism, etc?
Nope.

Was this photo happenstance or did you visualize it prior? If so, how did you envision the image and set up for it?
I wanted to shoot this image when my husband bought this car. I went on a hunt to find the perfect vintage looking twirly dress that would match the mustard colour 1967 Alfa Romeo, Giulia Sprint GT. I was very surprised at how good it actually worked out.

Did you use a preset to edit this image, your own selective edits or a combination of both?
I used a combination of both. I use LXC presets that I have changed over the years for different situations. I also removed a few nicks and bruises here and there, and did my best to sharpen the face.
