Inside Everyday Beauty with Ginger Unzueta

In order to capture the beauty in our everday life, we must first seek it.  We must slow down and become aware of our surroundings. During the three week Everyday Beauty workshop, I ask my students to look at their lives with fresh eyes. To seek the light, the details, and the connections within their homes. In addition, they are asked to seek within, to ask why.

I believe that through this intentionality, gratitude is developed and we become more aware of how extraordinary the mundane is. Our daily life becomes filled with beauty we didn’t notice before.

In addition to the three assignments given throughout the workshop, students are asked to shoot daily during our time together. Journal prompts are given for students to reflect and grow from each day.

During the first week students begin by learning how light can creatively enhance their images. This is followed by studying composition, framing, and perspective. Week two begins with a discussion on the spaces within our homes and the role they play in our memories.  Next, we discuss the details and their meaning in our lives and photography. Week two ends with connections.  The final week of class we discuss lifestyle sessions (planned and spontaneous), shooting in public places, the importance of getting in the frame, and the value of personal projects.

I love to see the students grow both technically and personally during this time together. Here are a few words from one student from the September workshop:

I am so humbled to have been a part of the Everyday Beauty class with so many talented artists, especially Ginger. She’s a slice of heaven and I seriously cannot thank her enough for an amazing class. If you feel “stuck” or frustrated, fearful of failure or not being good enough, or maybe you just want to have a good reminder to seek the beauty in your life, then I couldn’t recommend Ginger’s class more. This class is so much more than just the technical side of shooting. It will touch you on a personal level and will help you grow in so many directions.
