Our Favorite Photography Apps of 2016

With new apps developing constantly it can be overwhelming to consider which ones will actually be helpful to you at this stage in the game. With 2016 coming to a close, we’ve rounded up our very favorite apps of this year, you know — the ones we actually kept on our phone for longer than a month? Check out this year’s run down of our keepers and as always, if you have a favorite we shouldn’t have missed, add it in the comments below because your favorites very often become ours!

// COLOR STORY

available on the App Store and Google Play

Even with the release of amazingly great smart phone cameras, we still prefer shooting with our DSLR but sometimes, you’ve got to use what is available. In that case, when we’re shooting with our phone our favorite editing app as of late is Color Story. With a fantastic emphasis on clean whites and bright colors, its an excellent way to boost your mobile photos for a quick share.

// TRIGGER TRAP

available on the App Store

Trigger Trap is one of our favorites because it turns your smartphone into an awesome all-in-one camera shutter remote but specifically, it will sync up with your camera to nail just the technique you’re going for. Trying to create a star trail or play with distance lapse? Simply select the exposure mode in Trigger Trap and let it do all the work!

// VSCO GRID

available on the App Store and Google Play

The arrival of VSCO grid has brought back a major dose inspiration and professionalism to social media, though it never really has felt like social media to us. No selfies, likes or comments here, VSCO grid is strictly here for artists to admire and inspire. We adore it because by simply curating your feed and searching out other artists to follow, each time you log on, you’re walking through your own virtual art museum.

// SKYFIRE

available on the App Store

Featured on our Weekend Update a few months back, Skyfire pretty much blows our mind. This handy dandy app not only gives super accurate times for sunrises and sunsets, but it actually gives you a preview of what the sky will look like — clouds, colors and all. A total game changer, this app can determine the best light in your area on any given day, giving you all the power to plan your best session locations.

// DARK SKY

available on the App Store and Google Play

Possibly this year’s favorite, Dark Sky is the ultimate in weather apps and is so accurate, it can count down the weather pattern to the very minute in the very place you are standing. Have you been in the most unfortunate predicament of shooting a wedding on a rainy day? Imagine if you knew you had a ten minute break in the rain coming your way and could capture those awesome outdoor portraits your were yearning for! You will save the day, and might even look like a bit of a magician with Dark Sky.
