Where was this photo taken?
This photo was taken in our home, in front of a window. My husband and son were seated in a chair that was passed down to us from my grandparents.

DSLR, iphone, instant or film?
DSLR

What were your camera settings for this image?
My settings were: ISO 1600; f 1.8; and ss 1/500. I used my 50 mm Sigma Art lens.

How did the location add or hinder to your image?
I am a natural light photographer and so the location (in front of the window) helped to illuminate my subjects adequately for an indoor low light capture. I am most drawn to dramatic, directional lighting and love deep, rich tones and so some of my favorite photos have been taken using window light.

The only drawback to indoor low light images is the potential for them to be grainy if a high ISO is required. That being said, because I am drawn to this type of lighting, sometimes grain is unavoidable and I find that it can add to the overall mood of the image.

Can you tell us “The Story Behind” this shot?
This shot was taken close to Father’s Day. I was attempting to get a photo of each of our four children with my husband, as I do each year. When I happened upon my husband and our littlest babe sitting so sweetly I ran for my camera. This photo is especially meaningful to me, as it is their first Father’s Day together and they are cozy in a chair that has a special place in my heart.

What speaks to you about this image? What specifically made you press the shutter?
I am most inspired by light, connection and details. Other than my desire to capture a moment for Father’s Day, all of these elements came together organically and made me press the shutter.

What was your composition technique with this shot?
I knew that I wanted to shoot from above to capture their intertwined hands and the catchlights in his eyes and so the perspective and lighting dictated our little one being centered in the frame. This helped me to include the corner of the chair, which ensured that all of the elements that I wanted were in the frame.

Was this photo happenstance or did you visualize it prior? If so, how did you envision the image and set up for it?
This photo happened all on its own. I find those to be the most satisfying images as they are genuine and a lot less frustrating. My children are not overly co-operative when I get my camera out and have a specific vision that I am attempting to capture.

Did you have any lighting challenges/How did you light the image?
As mentioned above, I used direct window light and adjusted my camera settings to ensure proper exposure. Using natural light can be a challenge in a low light setting.

Did you use any special techniques – freelensing, prism, etc?
No special techniques were used. Freelensing is absolutely on my list of things to try!

Did you use a preset to edit this image, your own selective edits or a combination of both?
I edited this using my own selective edits in Lightroom.
