Teresa Peterson + The Story Behind
Maybe you’ve noticed on IG that lots of photographers push themselves by creating challenges and starting personal projects because after all, we as photographers are constantly growing and learning. As you’ll learn in this installment of The Story Behind, Teresa created a group of remarkable fishbowl shots from a series that she produced the previous year. She proves to us that learning never ceases and if it’s been done before, try taking a different approach to things. This is precisely what we loved her series, particularly this shot, and why we are sharing it today. With her meticulous eye and her insane editing skills, Teresa zeroed in on each and every important element of her story.

Where was this photo taken?
This image was taken in my living room, on the hardwood floor, in front of my south facing window.
How did the location add or hinder to your image?
I chose this location because of the indirect light the window gets in the afternoons and the hardwood floors would allow me to capture a reflection. Plus, my daughter could easily sit next to the fishbowl without having to stand or be on a chair.
DSLR, iphone, instant or film?
Canon 6D with Sigma Art 35mm.
What were your camera settings for this image?
f1.6, 1/250, ISO 320.
Can you tell us “The Story Behind” this shot?
This shot is a recreation of a similar series I photographed last year. I enjoy recreating some of my favorite images to see my growth as a photographer as well as my daughter’s own growth. Since she enjoys watching and talking to “Goldie”, I just set up the shot and then let her create the moment.
What speaks to you about this image? What specifically made you press the shutter?
I loved how she was peering in through the top of the fishbowl. As she did this, one of her curls fell down to the side. I felt that single curl added interest and a part of her that I love to document to the image.
What was your composition technique with this shot?
The final image was cropped in quite a bit. I wanted a center composition, to fill the frame and to focus of the connection and details of the image.
Did you have any lighting challenges/How did you light the image?
I underexposed my daughter’s face quite a bit so as to not lose the highlights in the fishbowl/water. This was easily corrected in post.
Did you use any special techniques – freelensing, prism, etc?
No, not for this shot.
Was this photo happenstance or did you visualize it prior? If so, how did you envision the image and set up for it?
Discussed above, recreation of a series that I shot last year. So, the set up was based on old images from the previous series.
Did you use a preset to edit this image, your own selective edits or a combination of both?
Combination. I begin all my edits with the same preset from the Tribe Red Leaf Flint & Steel set. I then continue to edit and make my own adjustments.
Do you have any addition information you would like to share with our readers?
In the SOOC for this image, the goldfish was actually facing the other direction. I wanted to create more of a connection between the two subjects so I flipped the fish in Photoshop and enlarged it.
