Top 3 tips for submitting your work to be published:

There are a ton of reasons why you should be submitting your work to be published both online and in print. Including, but not limited to, having more people not only learn about you, see who you are and your work, but also creating credibility by having been published.

Having been published both in printed publications, magazines and on several prominent blogs I have put together the top 3 trips when you are submitting your work.

Read the requirements – I can’t stress this first point enough. Reading the submission rules and following them exactly is one of the most important things to do when submitting. Most magazines and blogs will have specific requirements on how they want the images, sized, saved and sometimes even named when you send them in. if they want them submitted in a specific manner, do it! Ignoring this simple rule, leads to many automatic rejections on photos that otherwise may have been published!

Know your audience – There are countless places to submit your work as a photographer now, but its important to know which ones will suit your specific style and genre the best. Be aware of the style of shooting, lighting, subject and editing that the publication prefers and typically accepts and shows. If you shoot film, for example, there are specific blogs that only publish film photographers work.

Choose your work carefully – Be mindful when choosing what work to submit. Just like knowing the style and brand of the publication you submit too, you should also be aware of what there last several issues or blog posts have included. Don’t submit something that is similar to what they have just published. Find something unique and different that will stand out and that isn’t repetitive of their most recent posts. Also make sure to include a variety of shots, don’t submit images that are repetitive or similar, and include unique angles and details!

Whether you submit once and are published right away, or it takes several times, you can’t ever be published if you don’t TRY! Submit one session at a time per publication, and expect to wait several weeks for a response. Be patient, depending on how large the blog or publication is, it can take some time. If you don’t get anything published, keep trying!
