Tuesday Tips #279 – The Element of Shadow

Trust us when we say no one is jumping on the pumpkin spice train but hear us out — fall is no doubt on its way. No matter how hot the weather now, you will no doubt here the moans and groans from photographers like us near and far as we lament the end of another beautiful summer. Daylight may be sneaking away little by little but the amazing thing is that as it sneaks away, the shadows come out to play! One of our favorite ways to embrace shadows is to make the shadow a part of our subject. Usually considered an afterthought, why not include a subject’s shadow in the frame while taking their portrait? Shadows are such a beautiful way to add depth with the extra element of time of the day it was shot.

“Shadow is a colour as light is, but less brilliant; light and shadow are only the relation of two tones.”
-Paul Cezanne
