Tuesday Tips #296 – Shooting that Wonderful Winter Snow

Every season has its advantages that make them uniquely interesting to photograph because of the character they add to our images. Some cringe at the thought of shooting in the rain but mention snow and many will run for the hills! While snow requires some change up and modifying of techniques to get right, it is 100% worth it. Get that camera around your neck, get those boots on and get headed outside this winter, you won’t want to miss this winter’s showcase!

As many of you who consistently shoot in snow know, exposure must be spot on in order to not lose the easily blown out highlights. Blowing out the highlights in your winter wonderland can leave the scenery looking blah and boring. Use spot metering to ensure that you have captured all the texture and variation and before calling it good, double check your histogram to see if you should adjust your exposure to reduce your clipped whites.
