Tuesday Tips #301 – Finding Your Way through Documenting
Documentary photography may be your go to method to creating your art or possibly you’re in the other camp and feel it is something that isn’t for you? Even if it is something you’ll never end up sharing or you know its not what you will ever adopt as your style, we’re here to encourage you to at least dip your toe in for the experience.
The mere practice of observing and not orchestrating can be a very freeing experience for any photographer. This style above all is about honesty. This means you allow your subject to just be and experience the exchange, or lack there of, that is happening within your frame. Put yourself to the “fly on the wall” test: find an available subject, maybe a pet or a child, set a timer for 5 minutes and work all available angles you can to fill your story. For the full 5 minutes, keep your lips locked and your eyes open because all you want to capture is what is honestly happening in front of you.
“Do stuff. be clenched, curious. Not waiting for inspiration’s shove or society’s kiss on your forehead. Pay attention. It’s all about paying attention. attention is vitality. It connects you with others. It makes you eager. stay eager.”
― Susan Sontag
