Tuesday Tips #312 – Less Posing, More Directing

One of the tells of an overly orchestrated session is often the expressions of over-stressed grins that can grace the faces of even our best and most experienced subjects. One of our favorite ways to play the clown and get a guaranteed laugh out of our clients and most importantly, break the ice, is to put on our most ridiculous laugh while saying the vowels over and over again. I’ve never met a client who doesn’t crack up at watching their photographer clad in all their gear model marching around laughing loudly spraying “A…E…I…O…U” all over. Thanks to your orchestrated circus, while your client is doing the same and laughing and mouthing the vowels, your subject’s face will shine with ever so slightly different smiles. This can also be a great tool to use with families or large groups as everyone rarely stays in sync and the different smiles and laughs elicit a boisterous response!

“With so many ways to communicate at our disposal, we must not forget the transformative power of a live music experience and genuine human exchange.”
