Tuesday Tips #324 – Cats, Dogs and Co.
As a general rule of thumb, the same flattering light that we like to use while shooting fellow humans, will also be the best light when you’re shooting your favorite animal. You will unlikely be able to utilize a reflector or an additional light source unless your subject is asleep or very young and in the “baby” stage. When possible, shoot your furry friend near a window or if outside, in open shade. Keep in mind that the faster the animal, the faster your shutter speed will need to be in order to freeze that frame just right. Keeping that in mind, you will need to adjust your settings to achieve the light look you crave in your style while also achieving the shutter speed you need to ensure you have tack sharp focus.
“Art to me is an anecdote of the spirit, and the only means of making concrete the purpose of its varied quickness and stillness.”
-Mark Rothko
