Most of our The Story Behind features are about babies, kids and families but every once in a while, we come across a cute fur baby that we just can’t get enough of. Victoria tagged us in this enduring image of her newest family member Otto and we immediately wanted to know the backstory of her image. We are so happy to share with you The Story Behind sweet Otto:

Where was this photo taken?
Our house, in Brisbane Australia on Boxing Day.
How did the location add or hinder to your image?
The light was very low for this shot and Otto the kitten was super quick, so the ISO was very high.
DSLR, iphone, instant or film?
Canon 6D with a Sigma 24-70mm.
What were your camera settings for this image?
@ 24mm, f/2.8 1/1600
Can you tell us “The Story Behind” this shot?
My husband and I gave our children a kitten, Otto, for Christmas. We picked him up on Boxing Day and I wanted to document his arrival to his new home. The Christmas decoration was added at the last minute to grab Otto’s attention.
What speaks to you about this image? What specifically made you press the shutter?
This is image, for me, perfectly captured the arrival of our new family member and him exploring his new environment.
What was your composition technique with this shot?
Rule of thirds, I composed it like this so you could still catch a glimpse of the Christmas tree in the background.
Did you have any lighting challenges/How did you light the image?
Yes, the light was very low and Otto was very quick so I had to really bump up the ISO so I could have a fast shutter speed.
Did you use any special techniques – freelensing, prism, etc?
No.
Was this photo happenstance or did you visualize it prior? If so, how did you envision the image and set up for it?
I would love to say it was completely visualised but I had no idea what Otto would do or where he would go. I worked out my camera settings, place the Christmas decoration on the window sill and hoped he would take the bait!
Did you use a preset to edit this image, your own selective edits or a combination of both?
I used Tribe Archipelago’s preset LXC01 with with some adjustments.
Do you have any addition information you would like to share with our readers?
I don’t normally photograph pets, so this shot was definitely new and different for me!
